                                  ALL ABOUT SURGICAL STRIKE

Surgical strike. A term getting a lot of attention these days, thanks to Indian Army cross border(POK) attack. Although the attack has garnered unprecedented attention this time, common people are still not clear with term. Even though most of us have heard it for the first time, but this is not the only instance when India or the world has maneuvered this kind of attack. So this post is a humble attempt to clarify all doubts about surgical attacks and different attempts that took place.

What is Surgical Attack?
Surgical attack is a swift and targeted attack, which has a specific time duration, place and target. It is ensured that least collateral damage to surroundings or civilians is caused( if any). So it is maneuvered according to place, time and target. A lot of planning is involved before making the attack. Accurate information about the place, enemies is considered to make it successful. This preparation may take place for several days and only people related to operation knows about it. The recent Indian attack went for 4-5 hrs which killed around 40 terrorist cross border.

Surgical attack can be carried out by bombings, air strike or head to head confrontations. The recent attack by India included direct confrontations and bombings. Since planning is a major part of this attack and is quick thus enemy gets no time to escape.

Previous instances of Surgical attack
Before India's recent operation, there were other successful surgical attacks as well, like attack on Osama Bin Laden by US army in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Even that was a surgical attack of sorts where US army attacked Osama's fort at night and completed the operation successfully in few hours. The operation was specifically targeted for Osama, and it was successful.

The bombing of Baghdad by US forces in 2003, is also an example of coordinated surgical strike where government property was destroyed. Attacks was purported to cripple Ba'athist controlled Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein. The operation was successful and Saddam was captured.

Even Indian army had conducted calculated surgical attacks previously ,in Myanmar in June 2015. Operation was finished in 40 minutes which killed 38 Naga insurgents.

So even if we have heard the term for the very first time, it was always there in different forms.
